Doniphan County Pet Rescue

from information provided by Anna Midyette, Doniphan County Pet Rescue secretary

This week DCCF is featuring the Doniphan County Pet Rescue, a very active fund that is always raising funds to cover their expenses in taking care of the animals entrusted to them.

According to Anna Midyette, secretary of the DC Pet Rescue, two expensive projects are on the horizon for the Pet Rescue’s DCCF funds. “ First is the purchase of a new dog kennel.  The Pet Rescue Board has decided that the best way to add kennel facilities at their location is to purchase a pre-built kennel system that is insulated, climate controlled, sturdy, and easy to clean.  It would have outside runs for about 8 dogs.  The cost for such a system is approximately $50,000, but the Pet Rescue feels such a system would benefit the community as well as eliminate the need to keep dogs at the director’s home, as is sometimes done now.”

A second part of this project is the removal of the former Bendena school building that sits on the property; removal would cost around $13,000.  Midyette says the Pet Rescue Board is hesitant to raze “the building, but it is becoming more and more of a safety hazard and is past the point of rehabilitation.”

Midyette continues that “for those not familiar with the Pet Rescue, its main focus is finding homes for dogs and cats in need.  Most of them get dumped or are the result of feral populations.  Sometimes the Pet Rescue takes in a pet when a person passes away and no one else will take the animal.  It is also asked to take in a sick or injured animals.”

Midyette says “our DCCF fund has been incredibly helpful for the Pet Rescue.  We have used the funds for investment in our long-term viability, such as installing a septic system and adding a pet wash station.  Our DCCF fund has also helped in the process of adding a bathroom to the office as well as keeping up with insurance payments.

Other donations are used for day-to-day expenses such as pet food, vet care, and mileage reimbursement.  The Pet Rescue has no paid staff and relies solely on donations to function.

Recently, the Rescue took in 8 dogs, 5 of them in need of vet care.  The Rescue is challenging all of its followers to donate $5 to help with the vet care for these animals.  Donate by PayPal (docopetrescue@gmail.com) or Venmo (docopetrescue) or at the Farmers State Bank in Wathena.
